B2B SEO Strategy When Your Buyer Is a Committee

Most B2B SEO strategy is written for one reader. The deal is signed by a group, and that group has usually picked its favorite before anyone fills in your form.

A B2B SEO strategy that only ranks for the person who searches first will win traffic and lose deals. This guide is for growth leads at B2B SaaS and fintech companies who already have SEO running and want it to reach everyone who signs off on the purchase: the champion, the budget holder, the technical evaluator and the reviewer who can veto it.

The short answer: a B2B SEO strategy for a committee maps who decides before choosing keywords, researches each role’s searches separately, and builds bottom-of-funnel and hand-off pages before broad guides. This guide explains why the buying timeline makes that the right sequence, then walks through the six moves. It assumes you have one channel working and want search to produce pipeline, not just sessions.

The short version

  • In 6sense’s 2025 study of nearly 4,000 B2B buyers, the winning vendor was already on the Day One shortlist 95% of the time.
  • Buyers made first contact 61% of the way through the journey, and nearly 80% of seller conversations were buyer-initiated.
  • So search has to do its work before your sales team knows the account exists, and it has to answer more than one person.
  • Map the group first, then the keywords. Build bottom-of-funnel and hand-off pages before broad guides.

Why most B2B SEO strategy is written for one reader

The standard playbook picks a persona, finds the terms that persona searches, and writes to them. That works when one person buys. In B2B it misses most of the people whose questions decide the deal.

The timing makes it worse. 6sense’s 2025 Buyer Experience Report, built on nearly 4,000 responses from B2B buyers globally, found:

  • Buyers first contacted a seller 61% of the way through the journey, down from 69% the year before, or roughly six to seven weeks earlier.
  • The eventual winner was on the Day One shortlist 95% of the time, and the pre-contact favorite still won four deals in five.
  • Nearly 80% of seller conversations were initiated by the buyer.
  • Average buying cycles fell from 11.3 months to 10.1 months.

Read together, those numbers say the shortlist forms during research your sales team never sees. Whatever the group finds in that window, in search results, AI answers and your own pages, is what puts you on the list or leaves you off it.

One number we deliberately do not quote: the size of the buying group. Figures from four to more than ten circulate widely, but we could not find a group-size figure on the 6sense 2025 report page itself, so this guide does not use one. The point stands without it: more than one person decides, and they do not search for the same things.

SEO for B2B companies: map the committee before the keywords

SEO for B2B companies starts with a list of people, not a list of terms. Before any b2b keyword research, write down who actually decides; step one below shows how to build that list from deals you have already won. Your sales team’s call notes are the place to start.

Most groups contain some version of these roles. Each searches differently and needs a different page:

RoleWhat they searchThe page that answers them
Champion (often the growth or ops lead with the problem)Problem and category terms: how to fix X, best way to do YProblem-led guides that end on your approach
Economic buyer (founder, CFO, budget owner)Cost, ROI and payback terms; comparisonsHow you price, ROI and payback explanations, honest comparison pages
Technical evaluatorIntegration, API, security and implementation termsDocumentation, integration pages, security and data-handling pages
Compliance or legal reviewerRarely searches for you at all; is handed a linkA page written so it can be forwarded: what you do, what you don’t, where data goes
End usersHow-to and workflow termsUse-case and onboarding content

First, some decision makers never type a query that leads to you. The reviewer reads what the champion forwards. That page still has to exist, and it still has to be findable when they check you independently.

Second, the same company needs very different query sets. Google’s SEO Starter Guide makes the general point that people who know a topic well search with different words from newcomers. In a buying group that difference is built in: the technical evaluator and the CFO are not using the same vocabulary.

This is the work behind our B2B SaaS SEO service, and for regulated categories it is why SEO for fintech has to survive compliance review: the reviewer is a reader, whether or not they ever search.

The b2b buying committee picks its shortlist before first contact

The b2b buying committee is not waiting for your sales deck. In the 6sense data, buyers average eight to nine prior purchase journeys in the category, so most of them arrive knowing what to look for.

They also arrive with AI tools. 94% of buyers in the 2025 study reported using LLMs during their buying process, for tasks such as analyzing sentiment in reviews and processing information. The same report says that has not replaced their reliance on vendor content or third-party experts.

For a B2B SEO strategy, that has three practical consequences:

  • Your own pages are still read. The study does not show buyers skipping vendor content. It shows them doing more of their checking alone, before contact.
  • Zero-click answers count. If an AI answer or a search snippet is where a group member forms a view, being the source of that answer matters even when nobody clicks. Our guide to answer engine optimization covers how pages get cited.
  • Form fills arrive late. In 6sense’s 2024 report, based on 2,509 recent B2B buyers, the first 70% of the journey was the Selection Phase, where the shortlist and favorite are set. A form-fill is a signal from the last stretch, not the start.

A B2B SEO strategy in six moves, in working order

This is the sequence we would follow on a site with one working channel and limited authority. Each step depends on the one before it.

1. List the group on recent won deals

For each of your last five closed-won deals, list who was involved, what each person asked, and what nearly stopped the deal. Where your CRM has no record, ask the account owner. These lists replace generic buyer personas: they are what actually happened.

2. Do b2b keyword research per role

Run keyword research separately for each role’s questions, and expect low volumes: B2B terms with real purchase intent can show only tens of searches a month, which is fine when one deal is worth months of revenue. Then do the keyword mapping: one primary term per page, and never two pages chasing the same one.

3. Build bottom-of-funnel pages first

Comparison, pricing-method, alternative and use-case pages answer people already choosing. Transactional keywords and bottom of funnel keywords reach people closer to a decision, and they are usually less contested, so a new domain has a better chance with them first. We cover this order in more depth in our SaaS SEO strategy guide, so we won’t repeat it here.

4. Build the hand-off pages

These are pages a champion forwards to the rest of the group: how you handle data, what an engagement involves, how pricing is set, what you will and won’t do. They rarely rank for much. They exist so your champion can win the internal argument without you in the room.

Every guide should link to the page its reader needs next: the champion’s guide to the comparison page, the comparison page to the pricing method, the pricing page to the security page. Internal links are how one visitor’s session reaches the questions the rest of the group will ask.

6. Measure by pipeline, not traffic

Count the accounts that reached a sales conversation after visiting these pages, and the deals they became. Sessions and rankings are inputs. If you want to model what a set of rankings could be worth before you build it, our SEO ROI calculator runs the numbers, and how we work sets out what we report and what we refuse to.

A b2b content strategy built this way publishes fewer pieces. Google’s guidance on helpful, people-first content points the same direction: it lists producing lots of content on many topics in the hope some of it performs as a warning sign.

What a B2B SEO strategy looks like at zero authority

We are writing this from a site that has none. On 16 October 2026, Ahrefs showed momentumadworks.net at Domain Rating 0 with no ranking keywords. On the same day, six of the nine organic results on page one for “b2b seo strategy” in the US were sites rated DR 73 or higher, under an AI Overview.

That is why this guide does not promise rankings. A new domain does better on the specific, low-volume searches each member of a buying group makes, and on pages built to be forwarded, than on the head term. We publish our own progress in the open; our guide to SEO for startups includes the log.

FAQ: B2B SEO strategy

What is a B2B SEO strategy?

A B2B SEO strategy is a plan for making a business’s pages findable and persuasive to the people who research and approve a purchase. In B2B that is usually a group, so the strategy has to cover several roles’ searches rather than one persona’s.

What is a b2b buying committee?

A b2b buying committee is the group of people involved in a business purchase: typically someone with the problem, someone with the budget, someone who checks the technical fit and someone who can veto on risk. The labels vary by company, but the deal needs all of them satisfied.

How long does B2B SEO take to show results?

Google’s SEO Starter Guide says some changes take effect in a few hours and others take several months. For a new domain, judge the first months on whether pages get indexed and start to appear, not on traffic. Ranking for competitive head terms takes far longer.

Should B2B companies start with blog posts or product pages?

Start with the pages that answer people already choosing: comparisons, pricing method, use cases and the pages a champion forwards. Broad educational posts come later, once those exist to link to.

B2B SEO strategy: what to do next

Start with step one this week: list the people in your last five won deals and what each of them needed. That list will tell you which pages are missing faster than any keyword tool.

If you would rather have someone build the B2B SEO strategy with you, here is how we price an engagement.
